The Top Benefits of Giving Thanks

While giving thanks is an essential part of the Thanksgiving experience, it turns out giving thanks and being grateful have numerous physical, psychological and personal benefits.

The Top Benefits of Giving Thanks
Besides being a great excuse to get together with family and friends, Thanksgiving is also an opportunity to be reflective and thankful for all the great things in your life. And, it turns out there are tremendous benefits to being grateful, beyond just the precursory ritual before diving into a Thanksgiving feast.

Positivity
First off, being grateful is linked to having a more positive outlook on life, which is linked to numerous physical and emotional benefits that can actually improve your health and life, research has found. A study in the American Journal of Cardiology revealed that appreciation and positive emotions are linked with changes in heart rate variability.

Teenagers Benefit
Being grateful is also very helpful for teenagers. Studies have found that teenagers who are grateful are more likely to have higher GPAs, better social integration and greater satisfaction with life, compared to teens that weren’t as grateful, according to a 2010 study in the Journal of Happiness Studies. Plus, grateful teens are happier, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association this year.

“More gratitude may be precisely what our society needs to raise a generation that is ready to make a difference in the world,” study researcher Giacomo Bono, Ph.D., a psychology professor at California State University, said in a statement.

Gratitude can help us managed stress better, according to WebMD. Plus, it can help you sleep, if you write down what you’re grateful for before going to sleep each night, according to a study in the journal Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being. Another study from the University of Utah found that gratitude helps boost immunity. The study found that stressed-out law students who were optimistic had more immune-boosting blood cells than people who were pessimistic, according to WebMD.

So be sure to give thanks before diving into the big Thanksgiving feast, but also if you want to take advantage of the health benefits for being thankful, practice being grateful as much as you can.
